Runaway student missing for nearly five hours
SHOHOLA — The Pennsylvania State Police at Blooming Grove investigated a runaway student at Shohola Elementary School, who was missing for nearly five hours.
At 1:20 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, a nine-year-old boy walked away from the school and into a wooded area in the southeast corner of the school, off Twin Lakes Road, according to the police report. The student hadn't returned and was unable to be located, police said.
State troopers, a K-9 tracking team, and a helicopter from PSP Aviation responded to the scene along with numerous emergency response agencies and volunteers. The student was located at the intersection of Route 6 and Twin Lakes Road in the wooded area at approximately 6:15 p.m. The student was transported back to Shohola Elementary School, where he received medical attention as a precaution. The student was released to the custody of his parent.
The state police credits the numerous agencies and volunteers that responded to the scene to assist with locating and safely returning this child to his family. "Their response was swift, organized and professional," the police report said.
The following agencies assisted in the search: Milford Police Department, Pike County Sheriffs Department, Delaware Valley School District Police Department, the Pike County Emergency Management Agency, Shohola Fire Department, Dingman Township Fire Department and Ambulance, Milford Fire Department and Ambulance, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources fire warden, Lehigh Valley Health Medevac, and the Pennsylvania Special Emergency Response Team, Eastern Region.
