William (Bill) Edelman of Milford, Penn. and Athletic Director at Vernon Township High School, has been named the 2013 New Jersey Athletic Director of the Year. The Selection Committee for the NJAD of the Year reviewed 16 candidates for this most prestigious award.

Edelman, who started at VTHS in 1984 as a physical education teacher and head basketball coach, has served as the Athletic Director there for the past 18 years. During his tenure he has watched many teams go on to championships, and perhaps, even more importantly, be chosen by their competition for Sportsmanship Awards. A sign hanging in Edelman’s office says, “Much is Expected of Those Who Have Much to Give.”

That was also the title of a workshop he coordinated for the DAANJ (Directors of Athletics Association of New Jersey), of which is he now completing his last year as president. He started with the Executive Committee (now referred to as the Board of Trustees) in 2000, where he has served as Conference Evaluation Chair, Secretary, and President-Elect.

In addition to being President of the DAANJ, he is currently Treasurer of the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) and former treasurer and past president of the SCIL (Sussex County Interscholastic League).

On the national level, Edelman has presented four topics at three National AD Conferences: “Facility Additions – Learning from the Mistakes of Others;” “Club Sports – Is a Solution Possible?”

This past December at the National Athletic Directors Conference in San Antonio, Texas, Edelman presented two topics with fellow NJ athletic director Bill Bruno. The topics were: “Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks – Ideas for the Veteran Athletic Director,” and “Teaching New Dogs Old Tricks – Ideas for the New Athletic Director."
