Courier mourns the passing of reporter Jerry Goldberg
By Pamela Chergotis, Managing Editor
The Courier mourns the passing its longtime former freelance correspondent Jerry Goldberg.
Jerry died at age 73 on Friday, July 21, 2017, near his former home in Deer Park, Long Island, N.Y., and his beloved family.
He was born on March 1, 1944. He was a former 15-year resident of the Gold Key community in Milford, Pa.
Jerry was a friendly, generous, big-hearted man whose love for people and community made him a wonderful reporter. He covered government meetings in Dingman and Milford townships for many years, along with fairs and festivals, school events, veterans' activities, and much more. He rarely refused an assignment.
He was also a talented photographer. His nature photographs were especially breathtaking, with the waterfalls of the Milford-Dingman one of his favorite subjects.
I still remember the day Jerry called asking for work. He had no experience — he spent most of his life as an electricians — but promised to learn a lot, work hard, and do whatever he needed to do to be a great reporter. Give me a chance, he said, not wanting to let me off the phone before I said yes. You'll never regret it, he said. He was right. My only regret is not having Jerry writing for many more years.
He leaves behind the close-knit family he loved so much: his wife of 55 years, Linda; children, Ricky of Manhattan, Jamie of Deer Park, Long Island, Richard of East Islip, N.Y., Ryan of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., and Cathy Conlon of East Islip, N.Y.; grandchildren, Jack, Sarah, Delaney, and Gabriel; sister, Pauline Ferrara; son-in-law, Michael Conlon.
Anyone wishing to send their condolences to the family may write to Linda Goldberg at 134 West 8th St., Deer Park, NY 11729.
