A family affair at Grandma Goldsack’s Karaoke Café
Hawley. Although it offers a bevy of freshly made bakery items, karaoke is also served every summer Saturday evening.
Grandma Goldsack’s Bakery - a shop producing freshly made breads, cakes, pies, bagels, and other mouth-watering pastries - is located at the entrance road to Hemlock Farms on route 739.
Grandma (a.k.a. Yolanda Ramirez Goldsack) is a genuinely warm and welcoming person, and the bakery has developed a huge following for their products. She also sells some of her freshly baked goods to Key Foods in Milford.
About two years ago, Grandma and her friend, Lis Bauman, came up with the idea of a karaoke night on the grounds of the bakery. It was right after COVID and people were hungry to get outside, relax, and have some social interaction. What better way to do this than to have a Karaoke café, complete with coffee, tea, and desserts? The dessert offerings for sale include Grandma’s Brownie Sundae, NY Blackout Cake, Sugar free Cheesecake, and assorted pastries. Some people also bring their own wine.
Now in its second year, the Karaoke Café is open every Saturday from 5-9 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Although many of the people who come are from Hemlock, everyone is welcome. It’s a great example of a local business helping to create community.
Bob Goldsack, Grandma’s husband, is her biggest fan and supporter. He’s also the organizer, the MC, and the greeter. Their son, Brian Goldsack, often helps keeping track of the volunteer singers while Grandma’s twin grandchildren, Jude and Adrian, help out in their own 6-year-old way. People in the audience sometimes sing along and the soloists are fearless. There is a very homey and loving atmosphere and Grandma treats everyone like they are part of one big extended family.
“It’s not ‘America’s Got Talent’, but we have fun and that’s important,” Bob said.
