On Sunday, March 22 former Gifford Pinchot Audubon Society President Peter Wulfhorst will lead a field trip to the Bashakill Wildlife Management Area, an area north of Port Jervis that includes over 3,000 acres of wetlands and uplands. The Bashakill attracts many spring migrants, including several species of waterfowl and songbirds. As the largest freshwater wetland in southeastern New York, the Bashakill provides important habitat for over 200 species of birds. In early spring, bird species to see include mallards, black duck, wood duck, ring-necked duck, common merganser, bald eagles, rusty blackbird, red-winged blackbird and eastern phoebe.

Those interested in attending will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Welcome Center off Route 209 near Matamoras, and car pool to the Bashakill. The group will be birding at several locations at the Bashakill in the morning.

For more information or to register for the field trip, contact Peter Wulfhorst at 570-618-2491.
