Black Bear Film Festival names new executive director
MILFORD — Will Voelkel is the new executive director of the Black Bear Film Festival, appointed last week by the festival's board of directors.
He will take over the position held by festival co-founder Jerry Beaver.
Voelkel plans to build on the festival's mission to celebrate independent filmmaking, Milford's role in early 20th century films, and the natural beauty of Pike County to foster the arts, education, and economic development in the region.
Voelkel joined the board early this year, and has directed the film salon for the past two festivals. He brings to the board his experience with not-for-profit organizations, corporate leadership and training, and his long-held passion for film, event planning, economic development, and education.
The Black Bear board says it plans to foster more community partnerships and expand its base across the tri-state area.
Voelkel said the festival benefits local businesses and the larger community.
"Our four-day festival weekend in October offered filmgoers more than 30 films and events, a gala dinner, and filmmaker workshops, featuring innovative independent feature length films and short films covering drama, comedy, documentaries, and classic films," he said. "One of our prime objectives is to further expand our audience and volunteers in 2016. Simply put, it's good for all our tri-state communities and businesses."
The board is seeking new volunteers willing to offer their talents in community outreach, fundraising, grant writing, programming, and event planning. Anyone interested in getting involved may email info@blackbearfilm.com.
"We want to thank all of the Black Bear Film Festival's past and present sponsors, generous volunteers, enthusiastic attendees and our many other supporters," said Jerry Weinstock, a member of the board. "They make this festival one of the area's largest and most successful annual events."
