Epic paper-cut shadow show to be performed at Delaware Valley Arts Alliance
Narrowsburg, N.Y. More than 100 feet in length, “Long/Gone” is a single intricately cut piece of paper that flows freely from image to image drawn from classic works of literature. Harpist Jesse Sparhawk will provide the musical accompaniment.
“Long/Gone,” an epic and immersive paper-cut shadow show, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29, at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, 37 Main St., Narrowsburg, N.Y.
It will be performed by Philadelphia-based printmaker, shadow puppeteer, and paper-cut artist Erik Ruin, with accompaniment by harpist Jesse Sparhawk.
More than 100 feet in length, “Long/Gone” is a single intricately cut piece of paper that flows freely from image to image, while narratives and scenarios -- drawn from classic works of literature, from Homer to Dante -- emerge, collapse, and spill over and into each other.
Philly Voice calls it “stark, intricate and wondrous – Ruin’s paper-cut art combines the enthralling fantasy of a storybook with the prismatic, fragmented beauty of a stained-glass window.”
The show is part of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance's free winter Salon Series. It continues Saturday, March 7, with multi-instrumentalist Kevin Graham, and wraps up on Saturday, March 28, with storyteller Jonathan Charles Fox’s one man show “Life in the Past Lane.” All events will take place on the second floor of Krause Recital Hall.
Admission is free, and donations are appreciated. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information call 845-252-7576 or visit DVAA’s website, delawarevalleyartsalliance.org.
The activities of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance are made possible in part by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
