The ARTery Gallery’s August exhibit titled “Explorations in Depth and Color” brings together the unique work of printmaker Patricia Bronstein and three-dimensional paper artist Chris Hobbs.
Patricia Bronstein
An interesting facet of Patricia Bronstein’s printmaking has been the addition of collage. Now in this show, she expands her mediums to include ink, watercolor, and pastels combined with printmaking.
Her new pieces demonstrate how multiple mediums can produce atmospheric effects as the figures she presents are encapsulated in imagination and swirling color.
She has been in solo and group shows in the Midwest as well as here on the East Coast. She studied drawing at the Art Students League in New York City and studied printmaking at the School of Visual Arts in New York City as well as the Minneapolis College of Art in Design in Minneapolis.
As a former resident of Minnesota, where the air is grey and the ground white for much of the year, Bronstein especially appreciates the East Coast’s rich array of greens, blues, pinks, and yellows. Not only have these colors found their way into her printmaking, but she now enjoys experimenting with the effects of various colors on the same print.
As a result, Bronstein’s work carries a fresh sophistication that is both modern and aesthetically pleasing.
Chris Hobbs
Chris Hobbs, one of the original members of the gallery since its founding in 1996, also makes strong use of color in his unique and complex three-dimensional graphic creations. Hobbs’ work includes a wide range of popular scenes from Medieval, Victorian and European street scenes to colorful abstract designs.
Hobbs’ paper art methods and processes are uniquely his. Unlike Origami (which uses folded paper) or other one-dimensional paper designs cut from flat paper — Hobbs builds mass and depth by layering a multitude of small individual-colored pieces of paper. His work is labor-intensive as each geometric shape is cut by hand and then carefully fixed in place to create depth and dimension.
Once these highly complex constructions are complete, he encloses them in shadow boxes, making them suitable for long lasting, easy to maintain home or office display.
