Gothic mystery shrouds ARTery's next show

MILFORD — Two gifted artists will evoke a mysterious, Victorian Steam Punk environment at the ARTery Gallery, 210 Broad St., Milford.
The gallery's November exhibitions present June Ponte's "The Amaranthine Aspect" and Bill Rabsey's "Lost and Found." Exhibits run from Nov. 9 to Dec. 4. The public is invited to meet the artists at a wine and cheese reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11. 
An eerie sense of mystery pervades Ponte's artwork. Through detailed brushwork and vibrant colors, she creates portraits of iconic historical and cultural figures, often laced with mystic symbolism. "The Amaranthine Aspect" expresses her "love of the immortal countenance." Amaranthine ​refers to​ the everlasting souls whose work lives on, such as icons Frida Kahlo, Edgar Allen Poe, Harry Houdini, Abe Lincoln, Mark Twain, and Ernest Hemingway. The artist also creates Gothic-style stained glass luminaries, painted stained glass windows, and jewelry with a vintage twist. Her Poe pieces are especially intriguing to visitors.
Thought-provoking sculptureThe air of mystery continues in the work of Bill Rabsey's "Lost and Found" exhibit, in which old objects find new life and meaning as art pieces. In his old barn-turned-studio, he uses a collection of unusual objects to create witty, otherworldly, and thought-provoking sculptures and assemblages. 
Throughout his travels, he scrounges every yard sale and antique shop he passes, collecting every unusual, interesting object he can lay his hands on. When you look at his work, you may see old plumbing parts, assorted gauges, crushed copper from the Hudson River, old knobs, even a baseball or a doll's heads. His goal is not so much to make beautiful pieces, but to present unexpected combinations of found objects we​ might​ overlook, into works of art.
Also, the "6x6 4 $60" exhibit of six-inch square artwork created by the cooperative gallery's members will be debuted for an early holiday sale of $60 and continue through December.
Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
