Historical Society continues Dinner and a Creature Feature
Milford. Next up is “The Monster of Piedras Blancas” on Nov. 20.
“The Monster of Piedras Blancas” is a 1959 monster movie featuring a “Diplovertebron! As it goes, in the sleepy California town of Piedras Blancas, Sturges, the lighthouse keeper, is worried about the safety of his teenage daughter, yet he leaves food for a sea monster who lives in a nearby cave. The locals disregard his warnings at first, but they begin to take notice when the bodies of people killed by the creature are found on the beach.
More fascinating than the movie itself is the ability of producer Jack Kevan to recycle old monster parts and costumes into a distinct new one. This film was made to be a send off of the popular “Creature from the Black Lagoon.” Elements of the monster costume came from molds and casts used for the hands of moles in “Attack of the Mole People” and the feet from the mutant in “This Island Earth.” Parts of the costume would later be used in an episode of “Flipper” titled “Flipper’s Monster.”
The event will be held in the Foundation Room of the Columns Museum on Wednesday November 20 at 5 p.m. Tickets are $35 each and include dinner, dessert, coffee and the movie.
