Learn about Grey Towers' architecture - Special tour: highlights mansion's design features

MILFORD What do the Statue of Liberty and an 1886 French-chateauesque mansion in Milford, PA, have in common? You can find out this and other fascinating facts about Grey Towers National Historic Site at a special public tour of Grey Towers on Saturday, July 26, at 1:30 p.m. Grey Towers’ Architecture Tour will highlight the unique features and details that make this 44-room mansion a design delight. Built for the Pinchot family and currently operated by the US Forest Service as a museum and a center for conservation education and leadership development, Grey Towers is a significant national cultural resource. From 1886-1963 it was home to a remarkable family who contributed in many ways to our nation’s development. Its most well-known resident was Gifford Pinchot, founder and first chief of the US Forest Service and two-term governor of Pennsylvania. The tour will highlight some of the interesting and unique features of the estate, including design elements that can’t be seen elsewhere and descriptions of the eclectic style that can be found throughout the estate. The link to other well-known cultural resources, such as the Statue of Liberty, will be revealed. Discussion of the materials used in construction and the historic renovation that was undertaken by the US Forest Service is included.
