For the first time in its 59-year history, the New England Antiquities Research Association (NEARA) will hold a conference in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The Spring Conference will begin at the Best Western, at Hunt’s Landing, 120 US-6 in Matamoras from Friday, April 28 through Sunday, April 30 and will include field trips, presentations, the annual general meeting, a lunch buffet and dinner.

Presentations include “Artifact or Artifiction? The People and Events in Pike County’s Historical and at Times Hysterical Narrative” by Lori Strelecki; “Integrating Ceremonial Stone Landscapes as Desktop Planetarium Models” by Dave Gutkowski; and “Updates on NEARA’s Collaboration with the Pennsylvania SHPO” by Jim Wilson and more.

Field trips to Pyramid Mountain and Council Rock Mountain are scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m. and noon respectively. The full conference program can be found at https://bit.ly/43wLIMq.

Observant visitors to America’s northeastern forests have long encountered various stone structures such as rock piles, stone chambers, unusual stone walls and circles, propped boulders, standing stones, petroglyphs, and stone or earthen mounds. NEARA was founded in 1964 to promote research into the origins and functions of these structures and sites, to document them and encourage their protection and preservation.
