Pike County resident and artist Paul Rubino will showcase over 80 self portraits at UpFront Exhibition Space in Port Jervis, N.Y. this March.

Created over a span of 53 years, Rubino’s portraits range in style from realistic to purely abstract.

“It’s not only a portrait show. It’s a life history, an autobiography, a journey,” said Rubino. “Some look like me. Some are how I feel.”

Born in New York City in 1951 and raised in Queens, Paul Rubino began drawing and painting at an early age. He graduated from the High School of Art and Design and the School of Visual Arts in New York City before embarking on a career as a freelance graphic designer.

When he got married and had children in the 1980s, Rubino was most focused on supporting a family rather than his art career. But he continued to draw and paint daily.

“Painting is a religion for me,” he said.

A self-described abstract expressionist, his subjects include landscapes, portraits, and still life.

Paul Rubino’s work has been shown in multiple venues in New York City and upstate New York, as well as in Pike County, Pennsylvania, where he has lived since 2014.

The exhibit will run from March 4 through March 31, with an artist reception March 20 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Gallery hours are Friday through Sunday, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at UpFront Exhibition Space, 31 Jersey Avenue, Port Jervis, N.Y.
