Land and water in ARTery’s Home ≈ Land exhibit
Milford. Home ≈ Land is the title and theme of the October exhibit by Marie Liu and Randall FitzGerald at the ARTery Gallery.
The ARTery Gallery in Milford has announced the annual dual-featured exhibits of member artists Marie Liu and Randall FitzGerald for the month of October titled “Home - Land.”
Marie Liu, the current director of the cooperative gallery, has been painting images inspired by Milford and the Poconos since 2009. Landscape, waterways and waterfalls, history and notable people all have appeared in her work. One of the subjects she is drawn to has been the Lenape ‘original people’.
Liu created a painting of Nora Thompson Dean, aka Touching Leaves Woman, a Lenape educator. Dean endeavored to preserve her people’s language, culture and knowledge of their homeland through her teaching. She visited the region (from her home in Oklahoma) in the 1970’s to protest the Tock Island Dam project and consult with archaeologist Herbert Kraft. Liu will present this painting of Touching Leaves in her people’s historic homeland with Delaware Tobacco in the foreground, as well as other new paintings.
Randall FitzGerald, a longstanding member of the ARTery Gallery, has been photographing and painting for over 50 years. Professionally trained in the sciences as an ecologist, he has always worked to combine his artistic and scientific pursuits. His love of nature permeates his artistic life, and his current work is dominated by rural landscapes, seascapes and bird life, with a flare for romanticism.
Although he has worked with oils, watercolors, inks, acrylics and encaustics, the artwork in this current exhibit is rendered using inks and acrylics on canvas. Being a woodworker and environmentalist, he makes all his own frames with recycled materials such as old flooring, table tops, siding, etc. Each piece of art is custom framed with these repurposed materials.
Join them for their reception on Saturday October 8 from 6 - 9 p.m. and meet the other artists from this cooperative gallery. Free refreshments will be served.
