Doris Lorraine Heise, age 94, died on July 20, 2022. She was a resident of Closter, NJ for over 70 years. She was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and Home Economics teacher.
Doris was born in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, in 1927 to Mary Elizabeth (McElroy) and Steve Johnson. Her siblings, Anna and Steve Johnson, Alice Johanson, and Adeline Jodry all predeceased her. She graduated from Closter High School in 1945 and after working for Morse’s Pharmacy and the phone company in NYC, she went off to college at Ohio University. There she met and married her husband, George, after a three-week courtship! Married for 65 years, George died in 2015.
After living in Cleveland, Ohio, they moved back to Doris’ Bergen County roots. While raising their 3 children, Doris was an active mom in scouts, sports, the library and church. Doris resumed her education, graduated summa cum laude from Montclair State College in 1969, received her masters of arts in 1979, and taught for 20 years at Northern Valley Demarest High School.
Doris always put her family first, and had life-long friends. She was an avid reader and loved the Jersey shore, nature, birds, traveling and hiking. She was an exceptional cook and seamstress, always smiling and social, and had great pride in her Swedish heritage.
Doris is survived by her children, Beth Jones(Richard) of Montague NJ, Steve Heise(Carrie) of Snohomish, WA, Lori Benevento(Saverio) of Staten Island, NY; her grandchildren, Peter Heise(Sabrina) FL, Daniel Hull(Sarah) MD, Kristy Hawthorne, TX, Russell Hull(Paula) FL and great grandchildren, Joseph and Carter Hawthorne, TXand Skylee Hull, FL.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 84 Seward Ave, Port Jervis, NY on Saturday, September 3rd at 11:00 am. Her ashes will be buried at Brookside Cemetery, 425 Engle St, Englewood, NJ on Friday, September 9 at 11:15 am.
