George W. Schaffer, 92 of Hawley, Pa., passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart, Pa., and went home to our Lord on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. George was a lifetime resident of the area. He worked as a heavy equipment operator, tractor trailer driver for Goodman Cinderblock and Seaboard Tanklines, and was a carpenter for Resort Construction.
George enjoyed working on his and his wife Betty’s little cabin. He loved deer and turkey hunting, fishing for salmon, fly fishing for trout and panfish, and tying his own flies. He especially loved traveling with Betty to sled-dog races and in more recent years to herding and obedience trials so he could watch his border collies perform. His favorite travels were to the New England states and Alaska where we camped and hiked.
Son of the late Herman and Lillian (Werner) Schaffer, George was born on April 26, 1932, in Lakeville, Pa., on the family dairy farm. He attended Hawley High School.
George is survived by his wife of 39 years, Betty Padgett; many nieces and nephews; many dear friends; and his beloved border collie, Terra. He was predeceased by two sons, George R. Schaffer and James Schaffer; brothers Eugene and James; and sisters Alberta, Marie, and Margaret.
Cremation was private at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Stroyan Funeral Home, 405 West Harford Street, Milford, Pennsylvania 18337 (stroyanfuneralhome.com).
