DV middle schoolers shine at math contest
WESTFALL A group of seventh and eighth graders from Delaware Valley Middle School participated in the annual Dr. Frank J. Sottile Memorial Mathematics Contest at Marywood University on May 12. The contest is organized by the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics. About 300 students from grades 5-8 joined together from schools throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania. This contest was structured a bit differently from other competitions in that DVMS students were not on the same team. Simulating the real world, individual DVMS students were placed on a teams with five other students to compete against other teams within their age group. There were three team rounds and one individual round of math questions to be completed. The eighth grade students selected to represent DVMS were Tyler Williams, Jacob Marcial, Gaeron Friedrichs, and Danielle Krick. The seventh grade students were Rebecca Smith, Tyler Moraski, Drake Eshleman and Aspen Narvarte. DVMS Honors 8th Grade Mathematics Teacher, Scott Llewellyn and DVMS Honors 7th Grade Mathematics Teacher, Lindsay Sabo selected these students and took them to this event. Two DVMS students were honored at the end of the competition. Eighth grader, Tyler Williams earned a medal for being a member of the first place team comprised of seventh and eighth graders. Seventh grader, Tyler Moraski, was honored for being a member of the second place team comprised of seventh and eighth graders. Overall, the DVMS students were successful and enthusiastic about doing their best.
