MILFORD — The Pike County Historical Society dedicated its recent annual banquet to the society's longtime member, supporter, and President Emeritus, Barbara J. Buchanan.
PA Senator Lisa Baker and State Representative Rosemary Brown spoke in support of the historical society and the night's honoree at the June 8 banquet at The Settler's Inn in Hawley.
Buchanan is responsible for the rise to fame of the Lincoln Flag. This prized possession of the historical society decorated the balustrade of the Presidential Box that fateful night in 1865, when President Abraham Lincoln fell victim to an assassin's bullet, his blood stain on the flag a somber reminder of the tragedy.
"It was a night for heartfelt thanks and praise of Barbara," said Lori Strelecki, Director of the Historical Society and Museum. "She is an outstanding supporter of our cause and has paved the way for the present day success of our museum, and the recognition of an important piece of American history in the Lincoln Flag. Senator Baker and Representative Brown spoke beautifully, and I was proud to have them both with us for the evening and for their part in making it such a special night for our Barbara."
