Shohola resident Brandon Mabey recently graduated from Agora Cyber Charter School. As part of his education, Mabey took classed remotely each day, allowing him to also take college courses and play baseball while also working.

Since Agora allows students to take two college courses per year, Mabey has been able to take courses at Moravian and PSU Wilkes-Barre. He hopes to graduate from college a semester early thanks to these extra classes. During his time at Agora, Brandon served as Random Acts of Kindness Agora co-president, and chapter president of HOSA-Future Health Professionals.

Outside of his school work, Mabey served on the Bio-Art research and Journalism Committee, and Executive Recruitment Lead at Mind4Youth, a global non-profit spreading awareness about adolescent mental health. He also participated in the Pharmacy, Innovations, Experience and Research program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 2023 and holds active memberships in the National Honor Society, and Pennsylvania Academy of Science.

Plus, Mabey has interned for Scleroderma United, worked with the Stride Student Advisory Council, and played on travel baseball teams for years. He currently works at Elmer’s Country Club and also for PSU at Promised Land State Park.

This summer he’s beginning research for Penn State Wilkes-Barre, investigating the effects of ivermectin applications on American beeches with beech leaf disease and this fall will attend Penn State Scranton, majoring in pre-medicine. At Penn State, he will serve as a lab assistant for anatomy and physiology and play varsity baseball. He aspires to become a physician.

On winning the Shining Star Award (presented to a graduating student who has shown a special commitment in developing a leadership role), he said, “This award means a lot. I had two goals this year: Win the Shining Star or another Agora award and win a scholarship. Thanks to the PENN HOSA Foundation Scholarship I accomplished both and really finished the year off. What a great experience.”
