Charlie Vitchers Day

| 24 May 2012 | 02:30

Some 600 Delaware Valley High School students participated Wednesday morning in the "Stars of Hope Relief Initiative" by painting some 300 wooden stars. The work was done in connection with Milford Mayor Bo Fean's issuance of a proclamation declaring May 23, as "Charlie Vitchers Day" to honor Vitchers, a Shohola resident and DV alumnus. He was honored for his dedication to serving the nation through his work at Ground Zero and his preservation of the National 9/11 flag - which was present at DVHS as the Mayor presented Vitchers with a plaque and the framed proclamation. Vitchers Sister, Veronica Vitchers Christianson, was also honored for her work with the National Flag. She travels with the flag and was responsible from bringing it to the high school. Mayor Fean referred to her as the "modern day Betsey Ross" in stitching and repairing the flag with patches as a symbol of a healing nation - a stitch at a time.
