District hiring crossing guard after second student killed

MCKEESPORT, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania school district is hiring a crossing guard after a student was fatally struck by a school bus, the second student killed by a vehicle since last year.

Fifteen-year-old Deonte Cobbs was killed Sept. 3 while crossing outside a crosswalk at a busy intersection near McKeesport High school. Residents say students often run down a hill onto the busy street after school.

That has prompted the McKeesport Area School District to hire the guard and eventually install rails to keep students from crossing outside the crosswalk.

Fourteen-year-old Alyson Higdon was killed in March 2014 when she stepped off a school bus into the path of a dump truck.

Student Dahlasziah Konik says, “I really do think that we do need a crossing guard, even if we might not listen to it — but to put us in check."
