DV family seeks help with in-school diabetes monitoring
Milford. The school district will also see some tech upgrades, and announced fall plays.
The Delaware Valley School District’s October school board meeting started with a recap of the previous month’s events as presented by student representative and high school senior, Luke Peereboom. There were over 50 vendors at Delaware Valley’s Warriorfest, where students ran booths alongside teachers and advisors. Older students distributed tickets to students in grades K-8 for the homecoming game against Wallenpaupack. The Class of 2025 is excited to host a Trunk or Treat at the DVHS Front parking lot, next to the field hockey field, on October 30 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for elementary school students.
An upgrade to the school district’s tech support is currently being reviewed. The internet and fiber cabling are expected to be upgraded by next school year, to comply with state-wide online standardized testing.
The approval to transfer monies to the Capital Reserve Fund failed, as there was some concern about how those funds would be taxed. A workshop to discuss the issue further will take place on November 14 at the Delaware Valley Administrator’s Building.
Student health
The board was alerted for the second time during the public comment period that a fifth-grade student, Eugene Jarvis IV, with type 1 diabetes, has had to self-monitor blood sugar levels without a school nurse’s assistance. The student is required to wear a continuous glucose monitor and carry around his own phone, which is synced up to the Follow app, a real-time sugar reader that helps track the wearer’s blood sugar.
The school nurse was originally allowed to download the app to monitor the student, but has since been instructed to remove the app, leaving the student to rely on himself. Despite repeated attempts, Eugene and Jennifer Jarvis, the student’s parents, have been met with silence in their quest for answers regarding the removal of the app from the nurse’s tablet. They hope to have it reinstated. It was noted that a policy change would take up to three months, but no proposal has been issued yet.
School performances
The Delaware Valley Middle School will be performing “Aladdin Jr.” on November 22 and 23 at 7 p.m., and November 24 at 2 p.m.
The Dingman-Delaware Middle School will perform the “Wizard of Oz.” Building on the success of last year’s senior citizen night, the school will be hosting a free dinner and a show for senior citizens on November 7 at 7 p.m. The play will open to the public November 8 and 9. Please check the Delaware Valley School District website for further information regarding when and where tickets will be available.
