A breach into the school’s Learning Management System, known as PowerSchool, took place over the holiday break, Delaware Valley School District Superintendent Dr. Brian Blaum explained at the most recent school board meeting. Blaum said that while information such as names and phone numbers of family and teachers had been part of the hack, the information harvested was no more than what could be found through a Google search. The school district used to host a server with all its data onsite but transferred to using a cloud computing system this past summer.

A phone message was expected to be sent out by the end of last week to inform families of the cyberattack. Anyone concerned about the breach can contact the school. PowerSchool is used by over 17,000 schools nationwide. The investigation is still ongoing.

Spelling Bee

The second annual Spelling Bee held last week saw an increase in attendance this year. The Spelling Bee took place in all six schools within the district, with Delaware Valley Middle School students going an impressive 31 rounds. The winners from each school will have their names put on a plaque donated by the Rotary Club.

Fundraisers

Students will be invited to take part in a polar plunge challenge on January 25 at Montage Mountain in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to raise money and awareness for the Special Olympics. Health Occupation Students of America will also be doing a fundraiser this month to collect toiletries for local families in need.

The next school board meeting will take place on February 20 at 6 p.m. at the Delaware Valley Administration Building. There will be no workshop meeting on that date.
