Future leaders landscape at Twin Cedars

MILFORD — The Pike County Historical Society's summer interns offered their gardening services to the Twin Cedars Senior Living facility, located in Shohola, Pa., on July 25, while the Society's Director presented an interactive historical program to residents, complete with a hands-on introduction to artifacts.
The teenaged participants assisted with yard work at the center, keeping the grounds presentable and pleasing to the eyes of residents and visitors alike. Three of the interns, Jeanine Kleist, Rachel Beals and Dan Reno are students at Delaware Valley High School in Pike County, while the fourth, Heather Scholz, is a student at High Point Regional High School in Sussex County, N.J.
The rural setting is an identifying attribute to the overall relaxing demeanor of Twin Cedars, which is currently owned and operated by Tamara Singer. In 2012, Pike County’s Twin Cedar’s Senior Living was voted one of the top twenty care facilities by industry leader Assisted Living Today.
"The participation and enthusiasm from everyone involved is incredible,” said Lori Strelecki, Director of the Pike County Historical Society. “Although I am there to provide tales of local history, it is often the case that I’m taught a thing or two; it is wonderful to talk to folks with deep roots in the county's past who enjoy sharing their memories."
In addition to their recent community service, the Historical Society interns have cleaned Milford's Upper Mill Complex's three-story grist mill, designed and installed a new exhibit about Lackawaxen's famous author Zane Grey and scripted their own tour and interpretation of the Grain Mill on "Mill Day," which is slated for Saturday, Aug. 24.
The Historical Society plans on visiting often, and bringing more programming of interest to the residents at the senior community.
Singer provides a daily structured activities program at Twin Cedar’s for her seniors, and believes strongly in stimulating the minds of her residents. The programs at the center are designed to meet the social, spiritual, physical, emotional, cognitive and intellectual needs of the residents. In addition, there is live entertainment weekly, monthly educational lectures, trips to various destinations, pet therapy and a nightly ice cream social.
“Our seniors truly enjoy the programs provided by Lori and are enthusiastic about learning and discussing local history,” said Tamara Singer. “We are grateful to Lori and her interns for volunteering their time.”
The interns extended an invitation to the senior residents at Twin Cedars to visit the Columns Museum so they can share all the museum has to offer and return the favor of the hospitality shown them while visiting Twin Cedars.
