Governor to appoint next sheriff
Milford. Sheriff Kerry Welsh retired at the end of August.
With the recent retirement of Pike County Sheriff Kerry Welsh after close to seven years in the position, and a total of 52 years serving the community, the search is on to find a replacement, officials said.
“The governor will appoint a replacement to finish out the term or at least lead up to a special election,” said Chief Deputy Jason Cameron, who has been acting sheriff since Welsh retired Aug. 30. “That appointment will then need to be confirmed by the state senate. The current term is due to end at the end of 2025.”
Cameron added he is not seeking the post and is unaware of any official timeline to find the next sheriff.
“My job here is to be the chief deputy and keep this office providing the best service we possibly can to the people of Pike County,” he said. “I can tell you I did not request to be appointed [sheriff].”
Upon his retirement, several local officials wished him well, including Pike County DA Ray Tonkin, Matamoras Mayor Corey Homer, the Delaware Township Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and the Westfall Township Fire Department, among others. He also received a citation from the office of Rep. Tarah Probst (D-189) to commemorate his dedication to serving the people of Pike County.
