HAWK'S NEST — As Dr. Strange speeds up a winding road, his car plunges from what looks like the Hawk’s Nest mountain-hugging road.
The drive sequence in the new 3-D hit movie briefly features Route 97, the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway, in key scene as it curves through the Hawk's Nest but actually starts in the Palisades in New Jersey, just outside New York City. After the accident, the lead character in "Dr. Strange," based on a comic book superhero, loses the use of his hands, indispensable to him as a neurosurgeon after the car accident. He goes looking for help in a mysterious Kathmandu location, where he joins a sect, gains magical powers, and joins in a fight against dark forces.
The movie was filmed in 10 other locations around the world, including Kathmandu, London, Hong Kong, China, Los Angeles, and New York City, according to imbd.com
"Dr. Strange" stars Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his role as Sherlock Holmes in the British-American series "Sherlock" and for the movie "Imitation Game," about Alan Turin, the mathematician who broke the enigma code in World War II and was victimized for his homosexuality.
The Hawk's Nest is a perennial attraction for advertisers seeking to create scenes of fast cars taking curves amid stunning scenery. A Porsche commercial was shot in the Hawk's Nest in 1989: http://bit.ly/2gPSoAz.
Route 97 was also #2 in USA Today's 10 Best Readers' Choice for Best Scenic Autumn Drive in 2015, and made National Geographic’s Wild Delaware River Geotourism Map Guide that promotes the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway.
