Milford. The nine-year-old got to ride in a Milford squad car and throw candy to those on the parade route in Port Jervis.
Vincent Callanan, 9, was the winner of the Milford Borough Police Department’s “St. Patty’s Day Ride Along Contest.”
Young people were encouraged to submit a brief essay on the topic of what being a police officer means to them. Callanan’s was one of five entries. He is the son of Eluisa and Richard Callanan of Milford.
Vincent joined the police chief, Matt McCormack, and officers Lorin McFarlane and Brandon Gargan at the Port Jervis St. Patrick’s Day parade on Friday, March 7. He rode in a squad car, throwing candy to those on the parade route.
Also participating in the event was Rahiym Reed, 9, the son of Milford police officer Lorin McFarlane.
“Our department enjoys this type of event that lets us interact with young people in a non-enforcement environment, encouraging their interest in and support for law enforcement officers,” said Chief McCormack. “We appreciate the invitation to participate, with other law enforcement agencies in the region, in the Port Jervis St. Patrick’s Day parade.”
The young men were also taken on a tour of the Milford Police Department’s headquarters and given hats and sweatshirts with Milford Police Department logos.
