Monthly community lunch attendance hits new high
Milford. The lunch is held on the third Thursday of each month.
The monthly community lunch program provided by the Ecumenical Food Pantry and Good Shepherd Church in Milford has gained in popularity. According to the organizers, when the program started in 2018, it saw about 30 to 35 attendees. It has since grown to over 70 monthly guests who come to enjoy a community meal with their neighbors.
“The concept is simple: food brings people together, and the spirit of community and good cheer abounds as old friendships are sustained, and new friendships are made,” the organizers shared in a statement.”
Everyone is invited to join neighbors and friends for a free buffet meal served on the third Thursday of every month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Parish Hall.
The food provided all comes with an emphasis on both nutrition and food handling safety, all carefully supervised by each month’s lead cook. The meal, which typically includes a salad, bread, a main, dessert and beverage, has recently featured such main courses as barbecue pork chops, shepherd’s pie, chili, ziti with meatballs, and more.
There is no agenda other than to enjoy one another’s company, the organizers added.
The program is made possible by a team of dedicated volunteers, each with specific assignments that include table settings, food preparation, serving, and clean-up. Special events, including birthdays, anniversaries, and others are celebrated, and a prayer before the meal is typically offered by Rev. William Stewart of Good Shepherd Church.
The remaining 2024 community lunch dates are November 21 and December 19. In 2025, the first three community luncheons will be held on January 16, February 20, and March 20. The Good Shepherd Parish Hall is located on 5th Street between West Catharine and West Ann streets in Milford, just across from Milford Park. No reservation is needed and, again, there is no cost to attend. Just come prepared for a great meal with friends and neighbors, both old and new.
