This week, the townships of Shohola, Greene and Delaware issued burn bans, meaning outdoor fires, including the burning of brush, yard waste, and other combustible materials, are prohibited in those townships until further notice.

Greene Township said that red “Burn Ban in Effect” signs will be posted at each township line. The township also noted that the Board of Supervisors can apply and lift the ban at their discretion, but they usually remain in effect for 30 days. Bans may be lifted before 30 days “if the weather conditions change enough to lessen the risk of wildfires.”

In the last week, several brush fires have been reported in the Pike County area, including in Hawley, Dingman and Lackawaxen, and over the border in Sullivan County, NY, which required assistance from Pike County fire departments. Orange County, NY, also issued a burn ban this week for the entire county.
