New life for blasted tree
By Jerry Goldberg
MILFORD — Artist Walter Sansone of Gallery Works Studio inBranchville, N.J., has been carving away at a tree stump, 20 to 25 feet high, still rooted in the ground.
Located at East Ann Street and Second Street in Milford, the tree appears to have been damaged by storm. It is being transformed by the artist's hand to a totem depicting birds and beasts, from eagles to bears.
Sansone and his wife, Carolyn, have been at the Branchville location for more than 12 years. They work in wood, stone, and metal, and do copperplate calligraphy.
Much of Sansone’s work is done on location for individuals and businesses. The Ann Street sculpture is still a work in progress, and will remain on hold through the winter. The stump is on private property, where the home is currently is vacated. Milford Police Chief Gary Williams said he believes it may have just been sold.
