With the opening of trout season last Saturday came the sixteenth annual Pike County Commissioners Fishing Derby, at Lily Pond in the county park. Volunteer derby staffer, James Leiser said Lily Pond was stocked the night before with 600 Rainbow Trout . “All the fish... measured 16 inches to 21 inches,” said Leiser. The sign-in register indicated 285 kids under 16 years of age came to try their luck at trout fishing. “Last year we had only 220 children sign up and we expect more today when Little League lets out,” reported Leiser. “We’ve been here since 7 a.m. and I don’t expect to catch anything but I’m having fun,” said 13 year old Jessica Rhinesmith. Her dad, Randi, said they had come up from New Jersey to visit a friend and this was their first year at the fishing derby. - Photos by Jerry Goldberg
