Two local laws were passed at the November 12 Port Jervis Common Council meeting. Both laws — Local Law No. 7 and Local Law No. 8 — were originally proposed at the October 28 meeting.

Local Law No. 7 of 2024 overrides the real property tax levy limit previously established for fiscal year 2025. The passing of the law was necessary to enable the 2025 city budget to be approved.

Local Law No. 8 of 2024 brings good news to those seeking city employment but residing outside of city limits. Due to the difficulty in attracting candidates for various City of Port Jervis positions, the residency requirements have been relaxed. Eligibility for city jobs has been expanded to include residents of Orange County or those residing within 25 miles of Port Jervis boundary lines. Anyone hired under the new residency requirements and then moving beyond the newly established borders would be terminated.
