Schocopee Schoolhouse open for tours

MILFORD — The little one room schoolhouse that sits on the edge of Milford in Apple Valley Village will be open, and staffed with an interpreter, from noon to 4 p.m. daily from Friday through Sunday during July and August.

Known as the Schocopee School, the structure was purchased by the Pike County Historical Society and moved piece by piece in the early 1980s to its current location. It is one of the few remaining one-room schools in Pike County. Such schools were the foundation of the American education system. The Schocopee opened in the 1860s and remained a school until 1907.

For years, funding to maintain and staff the schoolhouse has been provided by the Pike County Historical Society and Steve Metzger, proprietor of Apple Valley Restaurant. It is their hope that people’s curiosity will be piqued, and that they will stop in and bring their children to see what it was like to attend class in “a little red schoolhouse.”
