Shohola students give thanks to veterans

SHOHOLA — Shohola Elementary School has celebrated Veterans Day with festivities and thanks for veterans every year for the past 20 years.
Once again, on Nov. 8, the school cafeteria was filled with about 35 to 40 veterans and with family members to enjoy breakfast and pastries courtesy of the Shohola PTA Hospitality Committee.
After breakfast Edward Sokoloski, a fourth grade teacher who runs the program with Principal Christopher Ross, gave a short welcome speech to all the veterans and guests.
A Presentation of Colors was made by Cub Scout Pack 26, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and some words of wisdom by the student council.
A musical presentation of "The Star Spangled Banner," "America Sweet Land of Liberty," and "Grateful Nation" were played by the orchestra and sung by the student choir. Principal Ross delivered a Veteran’s Day message followed by Sokoloski making closing remarks.
Boy Scout Troop 76 and Cub Scout Pack 26 made a roll call of all those veterans at the day’s event. Taps was played by Susan Apgar, and then came the retirement of colors.
After the breakfast some veterans went back to classrooms to speak to the children and answer questions regarding their service to our country and the meaning of Veterans Day.
The entire event was broadcast on classroom TV for the first time, letting veterans know that the next generation of young Americans appreciate those who served.
