Delaware Valley boys’ basketball outplays East Stroudsburg South
Milford. Another strong performance by a couple of strong teams.
There is currently a whole lot going on with Delaware Valley basketball. The boys’ teams played East Stroudsburg South on Saturday, December 16.
There were three games, but we’ll focus on the freshman and JV teams. Both are undefeated and both are smoking the other schools. If they applied pressure the whole game, they could win by 30+ every game. The JV team only had one competitive game this year so far but they still won. These kids are tall for their grade and if they still have a growth spurt in them then look out.
In the freshman game, if this had been a boxing match you would say that both sides came out swinging. Delaware Valley looked good doing it all, rebounding, stealing the ball and scoring, but ESS went toe to toe with them in the first period, which ended tied up 8-8. Trey Newton looked good in this period.
In the second period, Delaware Valley asserted themselves and marched out to a 30-16 halftime lead. It didn’t stop there. After three periods Delaware Valley was running away with it. They had their hands on the ball in every play. ESS could not keep possession of the ball because Delaware Valley was on them every second. In the third period the score was 41-28.
In the final period everyone on the team got quality playing time. At one point, even with generous substitutions, Delaware Valley went up by as much as 23 points. They battled for every possession and the subs never caused a downturn. Delaware Valley ran away with it by a convincing score of 59-39.
The scoring was well balanced and went like this: Trey Newton - 14, Jacob Brink - 13, Matt Marotta - 12, Paul Leslie - 10, and Joe D’Antinono and Well McKenzie both with two each.
The JV team looked just as sharp and just as talented. They had a slight lead at the end of the first period by a score of 13-11. Like the freshmen, the JV had their hands on the ball in every play, never allowing ESS to get comfortable and preventing them from setting up any plays. The half closed out with Delaware Valley up 33-20. By the third period D.V. was in total control. Well again at this point everyone gets experience and playing time. There were a few poor decisions and some missed shots but Delaware Valley still had a big win of 51-32.
Keep up the steady work fellows, this can be a very magical season for you.
The scoring was tight as everyone got in on the action. Alex Calvario had 11, Colon Mc Garvey 10, Sam Wood eight, and James Dabney and LeBron Walker both had five. The rest of the players score two or three points. So all contributed.
I have to point out that James Dabney is really big on defense, shot blocking, and rebounding. To me these two Delaware Valley teams look different from teams that I have seen here in the past. They are running and gunning. They are rebounding both offense and defense, denying the other teams a second shot and assuring themselves a second shot if they need it. I really look forward to seeing more of them playing in the future.
