Delaware Valley football off to a rough start, but pulling ahead
Milford. A roundup of games thus far.
For all of the Delaware Valley faithful fans, here is our current report. To start off, Delaware Valley had a rough start. The first four games were all losses. However, one was to a Florida powerhouse, Lincoln of Tallahassee where DV had to make the long trip down south. It was a 35-7 loss.
Next was Jersey Shore and that was a 14-10 close one that could have gone either way. Central York, another team that is usually very strong, was a 31-20 loss. Not bad but still a loss.
Then, finally, there was Scranton Prep, a standout local team this year and the preseason pick to be the local champs. That was an infuriating 28-25 loss that DV could have won and should have won but some very upsetting official calls at the end of the game left everyone quite unhappy.
This was followed up with three straight victories. Wallenpaupack bit the dust by a score of 31-14. DV started getting things back on track with this win.
Then D.V. traveled to Abington Heights and dealt a very good Abington team a 35-28 loss and D.V. is looking good again.
The most exciting and impressive victory came up next. DV traveled to Long Island to play the undefeated NY state powerhouse Long Island Lutheran. To put it in perspective the DV team had to deal with the long drive and a loss of some sleep, but they arrived all fired up and ready grind it out with a team that was blessed with some really great athletes that the private school was able to recruit.
Delaware Valley took the lead with their first possession and due to missing their main kicker, the team elected to go for the two-point conversion. It was successful. LILHS was not to be humbled just yet. They scored on their first possession as well. The game went see-saw for the rest of the day. DV would score and Lutheran would follow up with a score of their own. DV kept getting the two-point conversions while Lutheran did not enjoy the same success. Thus, Delaware Valley held the lead throughout the entire game. Every time Lutheran looked like they might take the lead, DV crushed their hopes with yet another score. The result was Delaware Valley had a sweet drive home with a 40-32 victory knocking Lutheran from the unbeaten ranks.
Notables were Mike Luzzolino who seemed unstoppable and seemed to score at will. Justin Estevez had a monster game also. He seemed to be Johnny on the spot in almost every important play. Whatever the team needed, Estevez provided it. Logan Olsommer looked to be college ready passing like a pro and even producing some great runs. Trey Newton did his Jim Rice impression catching everything thrown at him.
Remember folks, this is a prominently underclass team that is now asserting itself as a local power again, and this after losing several of the best players that the District ever produced.
This team is not reloading with an eye on the future, they are recharging with an eye on continued excellence. Way to go D.V., keep charging forward!
