Delaware Valley girls’ basketball clobbers Tunkhannock
Milford. Both JV and varsity teams outplayed their competitors by a wide margin.
The Delaware Valley JV girls’ basketball team played against Tunkhannock Friday night, December 15.
This was Tunkhannock’s first game of the year. The last couple of years when I watched Delaware Valley, I can only say that they were abysmal. They tried hard and never quit but they just didn’t have the basketball weapons and they lost pretty badly.
So when the JV girls started their game I wasn’t expecting much out of them. Surprise, surprise. This is a new season and this is a new team. They were crisp and balanced. They rebounded well, they passed well, their defense was impressive and it is not out of the way to say that they were dominant. The first period Delaware Valley was up 14-6. By halftime they were up 34-8. At the end of the third period they were up 42-16. They relaxed a little in the end period so the final score was 49-18 Delaware Valley.
This was a very pleasant surprise and I hope to see more of this. The top scorer was Amanda Aragona with 11 points. She also is the floor general out there and, folks, she is only a freshman. Cecelia Dickerson scored nine points and is a very good, steady player. She also is a freshman. Kristina Orby put in eight points. Hailey Westidge, another freshman scored six points, while Paris Machado had five, and she is a freshman too.
These girls have a bright future with all these freshmen on the team who play so well.
The varsity girls’ team won big too, despite some poor ball handling. Despite that, Delaware Valley was strong enough to take a commanding lead and hold that lead the entire game.
The first period they were up 14-7. At the half time they were up 24-13. Then the third period they closed it out up 38-21, and they won by a score of 45-32 with everyone in the game and getting quality time.
I really like Rainna Carr’s game under the basket. If she gets the ball while she is under the basket it is almost a sure thing that she will score. She has a great rebounding game too. Guess what? She is only a junior. Leah Bird has a nice game too. She is 5’10” and is also a strong rebounder, a strong shooter and a tough defender. And she is only a sophomore. Another sophomore that has a sweet game is Krystina Orby. She is a slick ball handler and brings it up court very well.
A real stand out who impressed me completely is freshman Amanda Aragona. She makes beautiful moves around the basket and hits the open teammate as well as scores well. Both of the Newton girls, Ciara and Reilly, are solid and dependable. Paris Machado will also come along just fine.
The scoring was so well rounded that every player got on the board. Leah Bird had nine; Cecelia Dickerson had seven; and Amanda Aragona, Rainna Carr, and Ciara Newton all had six points. With all the underclassmen the future looks bright for these girls.
