Delaware Valley varsity basketball beats Port Jervis
Milford. The DV vs Port rivalry continues.
I hope that everyone read my article of the junior varsity game because I spoke about the cross-state rivalry between Port Jervis and Delaware Valley. At the risk at repeating myself I am telling you that this is a very real rivalry.
Delaware Valley is well balanced but Tommy Parker is the nuts and bolts of this team. What Ryder Machado was to the football team, Parker is to this basketball team. This team is blessed with good ball handlers.
Logan Olsommer, who is also the football team’s quarterback, did some heavy lifting for Delaware Valley. He was ball handling, rebounding, and scoring just when the team needed it. Isiah Berrios is becoming the player that we saw last year. He is a real steady player getting his rebounds, blocks and scores. Jackson Corrie, Nick Jorgensen, Tyler Lombardo all had great games.
For three periods this was anybody’s game. Both teams would take small leads then lose it to the other team. It was looking like the team with a lead when the buzzer sounded was going to be the winner. Both sides looked capable of doing it. Then later Port took a 6-point lead. Their fans, the team members and staff were ecstatic. They wanted to win this game badly and at this point in the game they were looking really good.
However, Parker started hitting threes all over the place. Berrios, Lombardo and Corrie were complimenting Parker so well that it was impossible for Port to gang up on him. Delaware Valley was on a tear and at one point was up by 16 points and the Port Jervis faithful who had visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads a few moments ago were now deflated.
I will admit that I didn’t see this coming either. I thought it would be up for grabs right up to the last second. However, with a mighty burst late in the game, Delaware Valley nailed it away with a 13-point win by a score of 60-47.
Scoring went like this, Parker put in 23, Berrios had 13, Lombardo had 12, Olsommer had 5 points but also had 7 assists, while Corrie scored 4 but also had 5 steals.
That, my friends, is a total team effort.
