Delaware Valley Warriors fall to Harrisburg High School in football home opener
Milford. The 2023 season opens with losses to two state-ranked teams. But this is part of Coach Keith Olsommer’s strategy to schedule the toughest contests in the beginning of the year to assure his players will not be intimidated come playoffs.
Delaware Valley Varsity Football team had its first home game of the 2023 season last Friday evening, Sept. 1.
This after playing an away game against a very tough Selinsgrove. DV lost that game at a respectable score of 28-21. Considering that Selinsgrove is a state-rated team, DV made a good showing of themselves and kept the game exciting.
Friday the team played Harrisburg High School, the sixth-rated team in Pennsylvania.
The Harrisburg team was big, fast and strong. I thought that they might score 60+ points in this game but DV played them tough and held them to 33 points. DV had a strong second half but just couldn’t punch the ball into the end zone. So the game ended 33-0.
When I look at the ratings I have to go by Max Preps. I don’t know of any statewide paper that rates the teams so for me I am forced to resort to Max Preps. They cover every state and rate all the teams in each state. I think that local folks could do a better job rating the local schools but it is what it is so that’s what I go by.
Next week DV has another state-rated team in Downingtown East. None of these schools are in DVs league or conference but Coach Keith Olsommer likes to schedule the toughest contests that he can in the beginning of the year to toughen up his players and assure that they will not be intimidated come playoffs. They will be primed for the tougher teams come payoff times.
He could schedule week teams and bolster his win record but he makes that sacrifice for the players.
I for one am still looking forward to very exciting football at DV and I also expect that once local teams are on the schedule that we will see DV asserting its usual power and dominance.
