So far the Delaware Valley High School boys’ basketball team is off to a rip roaring season, at 4-0. Their victories are quite impressive. DV defeated Lackawanna Trail 58-30 on Nov. 30, then Notre Dame by a score of 71-38 on Dec. 3. The team also played Wyoming Valley West on Dec. 6, and won 53-43.

Here is a real high note. Tyler Lombardo scored 24 against Notre Dame and then 19 against Wyoming Valley West. This earned him the BRC TV High School Athlete of the Week. He is surrounded by a very fine compliment of players who all know their assignments and perform them well: Isiah Berrios who we have had the pleasure of watching for several years now, and newcomers Trey Newton, Alex Calvalario and James Dabney.

The player who really impressed me in this game was Logan Olsommer. In the past his game was primary ball handling and setting up other players. That duty has been passed on to Trey Newton. This opened up Logan’s game to being an absolute demon on defense.

A few other players to mention on the varsity squad are Alex Calvalario, Sam Wood and James Dabney, all who seemed to give the team plays at the exact moment they are needed.

On Dec. 13, DV played the Warwick Wildcats of NY. Now they were a very talented team who came in determined to walk away with a victory. There was no let up at any point by either team. It was a battle right up to the very last seconds when Tyler Lombardo iced the game, making four foul shots as the clock wound down. Warwick took the last shot, which they missed, and DV made the rebound and held the ball for the last two seconds. Thus DV won at 41-37. This most assuredly is going to be a good season.

I have to mention a few ugly moments in this game. Isiah Berrios went up for a shot when he was violently knocked to the floor. Amazingly he made the shot, but the foul was called against Berrios.

Shortly after, Logan Olsommer went for a loose ball and was actually body slammed aggressively. It should have been a technical foul, and the Warwick player should have been ejected from the game, but no foul was called. The fans in the stands went nuts.

Later, Lombardo was also slammed to the floor. He seemed stunned and injured at first but he walked it off and continued playing.

A quick note on the J.V. team who is also having a stellar season. They are at 3-1 and won big time in the Warwick game. The score was 54-27.

Joe D’Antiono scored 16 points and Harrison Bixby got 15. James Dabney scored six while Jacob Brink and Ben Ioffe both had six. This game was never in doubt. DV was in control from the beginning and just built momentum as the game went on.

So Delaware Valley pulled off the sweep. Good work guys.
