The holiday tournament finished with Delaware Valley coming away with the championship titles and trophies for both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams.

The DV boys’ varsity basketball team played East Stroudsburg North and DV came out swinging. The first period was the finest period that I ever saw a DV team play, with great defense, great rebounding, and great passing and shooting. It ended with DV up 14-9 and it was only a couple of three-pointers by East Stroudsburg North that made it look kind of close.

In the second period, East Stroudsburg started to apply a very aggressive swarming defense against DV, but our team rebounded with complete authority.

In the third period, East Stroudsburg could not penetrate DV’s defense. Three-point shots were all that they seemed to have. They hit the three pointers well, helping to keep them in the game. But their attempt at a swarming defense could not slow DV down. At the end of the third period, DV was up 45-27.

If you try to live by the three-pointers, you can also die by the three-pointers. This is what happened to East Stroudsburg. They kept trying for the three-pointers and going all out on defense, but it just wasn’t working.

Trey Newton made a powerful block on a shot where East Stroudsburg tried to get inside. Isaiah Berrios was a monster. He totally dominated the boards and put back shots to keep DV scoring points.

The game ended with DV cruising to a 58-45 victory. If DV continues to play like this in every game, they will pile up a whole lot of victories.

Here are the individual accolades: Isaiah Berrios scored like a champ, putting in 20 points. He had such a great series that he was named the all-tournament most valuable player. If Berrios continues this phenomenal playing, the team is in for a very nice ride; it looks like there will be no slowing him down. Trey Newton, the freshman miracle kid, scored 12 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Tyler Lombardo scored nine points, Colin McGarvey scored six, Alex Calvalario five, Logan Olsommer three, James Dabney two, and Sam Wood score one point, which was an unusual low output for him.
