Well here we are at one of the most exciting times of high school basketball: tournament time.

According to Delaware Valley High School girls’ basketball Coach Mikaela Smith, the team defeated Newburgh Free Academy by a resounding score of 57-27. Krystina Orby led the way with 15 points.

So now on to the varsity team. Port Jervis had the misfortune of drawing DV in their first game. This game was never in any doubt as DV was in command from the first whistle. The score was 9-3 in the first period and 28-7 by half time.

By the third period, the score was 48-11. At one point, Port had a four-point run, but it was followed up by an 18-point run by DV. Delaware Valley’s foul shooting was also very good.

In the final period, even with substitution, DV pounded away with 56-18 victory.

The scoring was pretty much balanced, as almost everyone got into the action. Here are the results: sophomore Amanda Aragona scored 12 points, senior Ciara Newton clicked for nine points, junior Krystina Orby hit for eight points, sophomore Paris Machado scored five, and junior Leah Bird also scored five. Senior Keira Lazzaro and juniors Jordan Dickerson and Reilly Newton all scored four each. Sophomore Cecelia Dickerson put in two points and sophmore Josie Lordi hit a foul shot for a point.

As you can see, this team is dominated with underclassmen players, which tells us that there is room for growth and we can expect good things to come down the pike, but we also get to watch these girls for years to come. Let’s support them, lets cheer them on and let’s show our appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

A side note here. Coach Smith is doing a great job having the girls work hard on their skills and then getting the most out of their talents.

Without getting into too much detail I must say again that the officiating can at times be quite questionable. The most egregious call was when Port made an inbound pass that went out of bounds. It was a clear throwaway yet the ball was awarded back to Port. How do you make that call? I’m dumbfounded. It caused a bit if an uproar on the bench as well.

It’s a good thing that the call didn’t come in a close game where it could have affected the outcome of the game. Oh and to the officials — it is okay to stand corrected and reverse a wrong call or at least give a clear explanation as to why that call was made and not just fluff it off.
