On Monday, December 30 the basketball excitement continued with the championship games. Both the Delaware Valley High School girls JV and varsity teams participated.

The JV team took the title without having to touch the ball. Two teams had to drop out due to lack of players: Port Jervis and Eldred.

Now for the varsity girls. Delaware Valley had to play Newburgh Free Academy. Newburgh came out shooting very accurately and took the lead while DV missed shots left and right, putting Newburgh ahead 19-12.

The second period was more of the same and things looked bleak. All were hoping the Newburgh would cool off and that DV would get hot. But it seemed like DV got called for everything while Newburgh got a free ride. Things eventually settled down and the foul calling improved, as did DV’s passing.

DV was down by 11 points, but against all odds, they gained ground, putting the score at 44-41 Newburgh.

In the final period, erratic passing troubled DV in the beginning, but they finally got it together and were scoring well. They tied it up at 46, all with 3:10 to play. DV then went up by two, then by three, then by five, and then by six for the win.

These girls played a fabulous game against a very competitive and determined opponent. Ciara Newton scored an absolutely amazing 27 points. She kept DV in the game the whole time. It was thrilling to watch her play such a flawless game.

Amanda Aragona scored nine points and did a stellar job as the court boss. Krystina Orby scored seven points, including four foul shots without a miss. She had nerves of steel and hit nothing but net every time.

Keira Lazzaro scored six and was a steady and dangerous player for Newburgh to cover. Rainna hit for three, but her monster contribution was defense and rebounding. She had a major impact on the game and shared responsibility for the team’s victory. Leah Bird scored two. She is one of those steady players that is always on the spot and opens things up for the other girls. She is a major asset to the team.

Now for the honors. Ciara Newton was named the tournament MVP and Amanda Aragona was named to the all tournament team.
