DV JV boys basketball overcomes Marlboro
Milford. Delaware Valley had no stars and all were stars in a team effort that won the game.
The first Delaware Valley Junior Varsity boys basketball game was scheduled for a later date but changed to December 5. This meant that D.V. would only have 1 full day rest between games. Would this take a toll on the young men. No it would not.
In fact, D.V. appeared to be charged up after the sweep of Nanticoke’s freshman, JV and Varsity teams on Dec. 3.
So this is how it went. Marlboro rode all the way down from Ulster County, NY to test out a Pennsylvania team. It was not a happy event for them.
The first period in the JV game was close, ending with D.V. on top 12-11. That was as good as it would get for the Ulster County school all evening. The second period saw D.V. up 25-13.
D.V. made some real bad shot selections, primarily just not taking their time to aim. Just throwing the ball in the direction of the basket or forcing shots from awkward positions is never a good idea. However D.V. made up for it by pulling down almost every rebound at both sides of the court.
They also were stealing the ball and blocking shots. D.V. got multiple shots at the basket and denied Marlboro the same pleasure. In fact, Marlboro got very few shots off due to D.V.s smothering defense. Marlboro chose their shots well but just got few shots at the basket.
For D.V., Tom Lombardo had a great game. He made steals that he turned into layups and scores. Carter Faubel was a strong presence under the basket and Isaiah Berrios was his usual total court side presence and good outside shooter.
Again this was a total team effort. Some of D.V.s past teams had a clear-cut star on the team. This team is one where everyone gets into the action and no one is looking for one special guy to carry the load. Every player on the team is a special player in his own right.
The 3rd period ends with D.V. up 44-15.
Marlboro tried hard but they just could not get any good shots off. Finally, toward the end of the 3rd period and during the 4th period the benches were cleared and everyone got a chance to play. The final score was D.V. winning 52-26 and I can assure you that it was not that close. The D.V. Junior Varsity was on fire.
