DVHS girls’ basketball teams play Mountain View
Milford. The JV team walloped their opponent.
Mountain View of Kingsley took a trip to Delaware Valley on Dec. 17 to enter a contest of shooting basketball into hoops with our local girls. There is good news and bad news associated with the results.
Here is the good news first. The J.V. girls were on fire. They controlled the game from the opening jump to the final horn.
How much so? How does a score of 59-5 sound? Is that a convincing enough of a victory spread? I’m telling you that these girls were clicking on every cylinder. Rebounding, defense, stealing the ball, shooting, passing to the open girl and taking the most advantageous shots, giving the greatest possibility of success.
In the first period, DV jumped out to a 22-3 lead and in the second period it was 44-3. It sure seemed like Mountain View was rattled as they couldn’t make a shot. In fact, most shots weren’t even close.
Here are the standouts, scoring-wise, however all the girls’ contributions went far beyond scoring points. This was a total team effort by all players involved so notwithstanding here are the scores. Paris Machado clicked for 18 points, Krystina Orby poured in 15 points while Cecelia Dickerson sunk 12. The rest of the scoring went like this: Josie Lordi got six, Hailey Westidge got four, and Riley Newton and Carmella Ford had two each.
Like I said, this was a total game. I never saw any team, boys or girls, DV or opponents, play this perfect a game. My hats off to this girls’ J.V. team for such a basketball spectacle.
So now here is the bad news. On the varsity side, Mountain View is a tall team. On top of an overall tall team, their player Addison Kilmer was towering. She clogged up the basket area during the varsity game and any attempt at an inside shot was either outright blocked or totally altered DV’s attempt to score so that their shots looked awkward or failed completely. This made DV’s game one dimensional, relying on outside shots.
DV’s varsity team had no answer for this tall girl except one: Rainna Carr.
Carr is tall but not as tall as Kilmer and she can’t jump as high, but she cannot be pushed around. Carr gets inside and takes over. She is a force to be reckoned with. Despite her gallant effort, Kilmer was still too much.
The bright spots for DV were Ciara Newton who scored 14 points. In fact, DV scored seven points in the first period and Newton scored all seven. She had a really good game despite the odds against the team.
Keira Lazzaro scored five and Carr four. Jordan Dickerson, Amanda Aragona, and Leah Bird all had two apiece.
This was a quality effort on the part of DV but they were just overpowered by a taller team who had a girl of extraordinary height.
The final score was 44-29 Mountain View. This still has the makings of a good season. These girls are talented and will win their fair share. They will be fun to watch.
