The Delaware Valley High School girls’ basketball teams recently took on Wallenpaupack with mixed results. For the JV team, it was close but a victory is a victory and they won 38-34.

The varsity game was another story. In the first period both teams had trouble scoring; the period ended with DV up 6-5. In the second period, DV still couldn’t find the basket. Wallenpaupack was not doing much better but they did enough to take the lead at 18-13.

Now in the third period, DV was being out rebounded and the usually dependable shooters were missing many of their shots. The period ended at 30-23 Wallenpaupack.

The final period was a total disaster for DV, even the surest shooters couldn’t sink a basket. Here was the biggest problem throughout the game though: the girls kept trying to pass to other teammates that were surrounded by Wallenpaupack players. That’s six opposing players’ hands going for the ball against your one player — those are not good odds and you can figure out the outcome.

To make matters worse, DV also tried to drive to the hoop against a crowd of Wallenpaupack girls. Again, it was six or eight hands against one player, and they didn’t learn their lesson. They kept up the passing and driving against all odds. The result was that they kept losing the ball and every opportunity to score any points. They had opportunities to take outside shots but they just kept trying to force their way inside and it didn’t work. They needed to hit some outside shots and force the other team’s defense to come out. That will open up the inside game.

The team should take note of what happened and correct it. The game ended with a win for Wallenpaupack at 38-26 Wallenpaupack.
