Veterans and members of American Legion Post 139, Milford, PA, are the unsung heroes of our community in many ways. Although their service in the military is well known and gratefully appreciated, their efforts to continue helping our country after leaving the service often go unannounced and unrecognized.
Here are two examples. According to Post Commander Jim Mulligan, the organization just made a round of donations to help several local nonprofit groups assist our community: $1,000 was given to the Ecumenical Food Pantry of Pike County; $500 each to Milford’s, Dingman’s, and Lords Valley fire departments; and $250 to the Pike County Humane Society.
The food pantry is extremely grateful for the support of the legion, especially at this time when they are serving record numbers of families each week.
In addition to donating funds to worthy causes, the legion cooks and provides delicious complete Thanksgiving dinners free of charge to members of our community. This year volunteers of Post 139 will be cooking over 300 turkey dinners which will be served at noon on Saturday, November 18th. Complimentary dinners will be provided to everyone while supplies last. Last year they delivered 100 dinners to residents of Heritage Pointe Senior Living Community and served over 230 dinners at the Legion Hall for diners to take home or eat there.
We can salute this special group for all they have done and continue to do. On Veterans Day, November 11, at 11 a.m. we will have an opportunity to recognize and thank our veterans by attending the ceremony at Veterans Monument on Broad Street in Milford.
